EQUIPO DE DESPLIEGUE DE EMERGENCIA A GRANADA

En marzo de 2020, el Dr. Benjamín Puertas formó parte de un equipo de la OPS desplegado en Granada al comienzo de la pandemia para apoyar la preparación y respuesta del país ante la pandemia de COVID-19 y para brindar cooperación técnica y capacitación en las siguientes áreas: Organización y respuesta de los servicios de salud, vigilancia y rastreo de contactos, prevención y control de infecciones, uso de EPP y recursos humanos para la salud, movilidad y escalamiento. El equipo llegó el mismo día que el Ministerio de Salud anunció públicamente la detección del primer caso de COVID-19 en la isla. El grupo de OPS capacitó a trabajadores de la salud y brindó recomendaciones a las autoridades sanitarias nacionales.

“Es difícil describir lo que pasaba por mi mente cuando supe que formaría parte del equipo de que sería enviado a Granada. Por una parte, sentía la emoción de apoyar de manera activa y directa la respuesta a la pandemia, pero por otro lado no dejaba de sentir temor de exponerme al virus en un momento en que sabíamos poco sobre el comportamiento de la enfermedad y cuando la disponibilidad de las vacunas era aún muy lejana.”

“Uno de los momentos más duros fue la despedida de mi esposa y de mi hijo de dos años… La noche anterior apenas dormí pensando en la posibilidad de contagiarme y peor aún, de traer el virus al seno de mi familia. En un aeropuerto casi vacío, mi esposa me abrazó y con lágrimas me hizo prometer que me cuidara.”

EMERGENCY DEPLOYMENT TEAM TO GRENADA

In March 202, Dr. Benjamin Puertas was part of a PAHO team deployed to Grenada at the beginning of the pandemic to support the country’s preparedness and response to COVID-19 pandemic, and to provide technical cooperation and training in the following areas: Health services organization and response, surveillance and contact tracing, infection prevention and control, PPE use and human resources for health staffing, mobility and scaling. The team arrived the same day the Ministry of Health publicly announced the detection of the first COVID-19 case on the island. PAHO trained healthcare workers and provided recommendations to national health authorities.

“It is difficult to describe what was going through my mind when I found out that I would be part of the team that would be deployed to Granada. I was excited to support the COVID-19 response actively and directly, but on the other hand, I was afraid of being exposed to the virus at a time when we knew little about the behavior of the disease and when the availability of vaccines was still a long way off.”

“One of the hardest moments was the farewell to my wife and my two-year-old son… The night before I barely slept thinking about the possibility of getting infected and worse still, of bringing the virus into my family. In an almost empty airport, my wife hugged me and tearfully made me promise to take care of myself.”

EVITANDO EL AISLAMIENTO INNECESARIO DE ENFERMERAS CUBANAS

Ocho enfermeras de cuidados intensivos provenientes de Cuba acababan de llegar al país y estaban a punto de ser puestas en cuarentena, a pesar de la urgente necesidad de su experiencia para tratar los casos de COVID-19. El Dr. Puertas recomendó la aplicación de la Evaluación de exposición de riesgo para los trabajadores de la salud en los establecimientos de salud de OMS y presentó el instrumento y sus principales componentes a las autoridades sanitarias. Un día después, el país aplicó la evaluación a las enfermeras cubanas y encontró que el riesgo de exposición era mínimo o inexistente. Las enfermeras fueron enviadas a la unidad COVID-19 el mismo día.

AVOIDING UNNECESSARY ISOLATION OF CUBAN NURSES

Eight intensive care unit (ICU) Cuban nurses have just arrived in the country and were about to be quarantined, despite the urgent need of their expertise dealing with COVID-19 cases. Dr. Puertas recommended the application of WHO Assessment of risk exposure for health workers in health facilities and presented the main components to health authorities. A day after, the country applied the assessment to the IUC Cuban nurses and found that the risk of exposure was either minimal or non-existent. The nurses were deployed to the COVID-19 unit the same day.
